The five Task 2 essay types
Opinion, discussion, advantages/disadvantages, problem/solution and two-part questions.
Type | Typical wording | Your job |

Opinion | To what extent do you agree or disagree? | Give a clear position and keep it throughout |
Discussion | Discuss both views and give your own opinion. | Explain both sides fairly, then state your view |
Advantages / disadvantages | Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? | Weigh both and decide |
Problem / solution | What problems does this cause? How can they be solved? | Link each solution to a problem |
Two-part | Why is this happening? Is it positive or negative? | Answer both questions fully |
