Reading strategies, lesson 1 of 8
Skimming and scanning
Two different reading speeds for two different jobs.
Skimming means reading quickly for the general idea. Read the title, the first sentence of each paragraph and any headings or diagrams. Two minutes is enough.
Scanning means searching for a specific detail, a name, date, number or keyword, without reading every word. Move your eyes quickly down the page until you find it, then read that part carefully.
Most questions need both: skim to find the right paragraph, then read closely to confirm the answer.
