IELTS Speaking

Speak naturally, fluently and with confidence.

Duration
11-14 minutes
Format
Face to face, recorded
Parts
3
Part 2 prep
1 minute + pencil & paper

How it works

Part 1, 4-5 min

The examiner introduces themselves and asks about familiar topics such as home, work, studies and interests.

Part 2, 3-4 min

You receive a cue card, have one minute to prepare, then speak for up to two minutes. One or two follow-up questions may follow.

Part 3, 4-5 min

A two-way discussion of more abstract ideas connected to the Part 2 topic. Explain, justify and speculate.

What examiners assess

  • Fluency & Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy
  • Pronunciation

Common mistakes to avoid

  • One-word or one-sentence answers in Part 1
  • Reciting memorised answers (examiners notice and mark them down)
  • Speeding up when nervous: slow, clear speech scores higher

Strategies that work

  1. 1

    Answer, explain, example

Extend every answer: give your answer, a reason, and a short example from your own life.

  2. 2

    Use your minute well

In Part 2, jot keywords for each bullet point rather than full sentences, then add a personal story.

  3. 3

    Paraphrase when stuck

Forgot a word? Describe it. Self-correction and paraphrasing show strong control of English.

  4. 4

    Clarity over accent

You do not need a British or American accent. Clear word stress and natural intonation matter far more.
